[Review] Hótel Edda VÍK

Hótel Edda Vík is located along the southern coast in the quaint town of Vík. The region is lush with rugged beauty that stretches as far as the eye can see. The hotel offers fantastic views of the dramatic cliffs and black sand beaches. The majestic Mýrdalsjökull glacier lies just a few kilometers north which offers a plethora of activities including trekking, snowmobiling, and super jeep tours. The area is a bird lover’s paradise, with huge Arctic tern colonies, puffin breeding grounds and a wide variety of auks.

Conveniently located about halfway between Reykjavík and Jökulsárlón, it is the ideal base camp for exploring the South Coast. Dyrhólaey (meaning ‘door-hole’) is located about ten minutes from Vík and has great views of the basalt columned cliffs, black sand beaches and Reynisdrangar (aka the “three trolls”) in the distance.

The hotel is open all year around. It offers a total of 52 rooms and 10 small cottages next to the hotel. Wireless internet access is available for a small fee and a computer is available in the lobby for guests. Dinner is served at the ocean side restaurant Ströndin just steps from the hotel. Breakfast is offered daily in the hotel and provides some of Iceland’s traditional breakfast options: coffee, ham, cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, yogurt, fish, caviar and crackers. Let’s not forget a healthy serving of “LÝSI” (fish oil) to boost the immune system!

We had a wonderful stay here and were excited to talk to the hotel manager, Elías, about the new Icelandair Hotel in Vík. Scheduled to open in 2014, the style is sleek, black and spacious.

Elías gave us a short tour of one of the most sought after corner rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows and a spectacular view of the town of Vík and the nesting cliffs behind the hotel.
