A ten day tour of Iceland

A ten day tour of Iceland

The lovely couple behind Pure Adirondacks, Evan & Hilary Williams contacted me to help them plan an 10-day road trip around Iceland. They drove around the island, hiked mountains, explored, and took some amazing footage. Here is their official blog post filled with ideas what to see & do while road tripping around Iceland. "In early June 2013, after months of excitedly researching and planning our trip, Evan and I finally landed in Iceland.  Our friend Morgan had flown in earlier in the day, picked up our trusty rental car and camping gear, and made his way back to the airport to rendezvous with us."

South Iceland - What to See & Do - Part 1/3

South Iceland - What to See & Do - Part 1/3

I often get emails from people asking for informative tips on what to see & do while road tripping around South Iceland. The South coast is a popular route to drive throughout the year and I always recommend this area for travelers who only have a few days in Iceland.

So I decided to make a three part post about South Iceland, from Reykjavik to Jökulsárlón. This is part 1 and I share my knowledge about e.g. Þingvellir national park, Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hotspring, Kerið volcano crater, Laugarvatn Geothermal baths and more.

I want to introduce a better way to explore Iceland when using the stopover program. I get a lot of emails from people who want to visit Iceland and often they only have a few days to spend in Iceland, so the big question is what to see & do! I teamed up with Icelandair, Sixt car rental, Hotel Edda, Icelandair Hotel and Fontana Spa to enjoy 5 days roaming around West Iceland. Joining me for the trip was the travel blogger Lola, who runs the blog Where in the world is Lola. Traveling from the US to Europe or vice versa you can stop in Iceland for up to 7 days when flying with Icelandair without any extra flight cost.

Miss Wanderlust takes Reykjavik, Iceland!

Miss Wanderlust takes Reykjavik, Iceland!

As soon as I arrived in Reykjavik 101, I felt like I was in a familiar place. I had been dreaming about visiting Iceland for such a long time that it’s sights and even it’s vibe were already imprinted on my minds’ eye. The bus ride from the airport into town was mildly surreal, driving through lava fields on an overcast morning, but nowhere near as surreal as the days and the scenes that were to come.

Heading South to Reykjavík ~ #IcelandChallenge Day 7

On our last day, we traveled from Akureyri to Reykjavik which takes about 5 hours.

We spent the time exchanging good music, enjoying the scenery and discussing our favorite parts of the trip. I don’t recommend making this trip in such a short time, but we were excited to get to Reykjavik to enjoy a night on the town!

Exploring Katla volcano ~ #IcelandChallenge

After a hectic day exploring the South coast, we had a surprise waiting for us when we reached VÍK. Elías the manager of Hótel Edda VÍK had organized a super jeep tour for us with KatlaTrack. We were picked up by Guðjón, the owner of the tour company around 10pm. Guðjón was born and raised in Mýrdalur and since he’s a local, he knew so much about the history and geography of the area. After a little chat, it was time for Liz, Marika and I to hop into the super jeep and buckle up! We had no idea what was in store for us, but we were ready for anything.

Seljavallalaug & Dyrhólaey ~ #IcelandChallenge Day 2

Day two of the Iceland Challenge was probably one of our longest and most exciting days.  We kept a fast pace, but always jumped at the opportunity to stop the car, wide-eyed with our cameras at what I can only describe as some of the most beautiful sites of the south coast.

Are you ready to chase waterfalls, soak in the oldest swimming pool in Iceland and explore the South coast with me?

Laugarvatn & South Iceland ~ #IcelandChallenge Day 1

I’d like to say we kicked off our Iceland Challenge with a bang, but we woke up to ominous skies and the distinct possibility of a downpour. Nevertheless our spirits were high and our excitement mounting as we drove to Keflavik International Airport. Marika, who had studied Medieval Studies with Liz in college, arrived exhausted after flying almost 2000km from Portland, Oregon. I’d like to say we kicked off our Iceland Challenge with a bang, but we woke up to ominous skies and the distinct possibility of a downpour. Are you guys ready for this journey?!
