Reykjavik is excited to host the fifteenth annual Gay Pride Festival. The Pride festival has evolved into a colorful six day celebration that attracts up to 100 thousand guests from all over the world. The Reykjavik Gay Pride is held from Aug 6th-11th with many events every day. Gay pride is an unquestionably important event for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in Iceland. The festival promotes visibility and courage and provides a platform to manifest pride before our fellow citizens.

When I discovered that one of my best friends flew from France to Canada recently without stopping by to visit me in Iceland, I was (like his other friends here in Reykjavik), well and truly miffed! Turns out though, despite the fact that he’d lived here previously, he didn’t know about Icelandair’s rather nifty STOPOVER program, which allows people travelling on flights between Europe and the USA and vise-versa, to stopover in Iceland without the expense of additional airfares.

The Icelandic Yule Lads have little resemblance to the famous Santa Claus. The Icelandic Yule Lads are descended from trolls and their original role was to strike fear in the hearts of children. The thirteen brothers are the sons of two of the most hideous ogres ever known in Iceland, Grýla and Leppalúði. Follow the journey of the Yule Lads brothers with Tiny Iceland. There is no doubt that most children would have wanted to avoid the Icelandic Yule Lads in the old days, since they were used by parents to frighten their children into behaving – just as Grýla and Leppalúði are used for today.
